Our story

Once upon a pond…

…there lived a toad who never hurried. While the other toads leapt about catching flies, he stretched out on a sun-warmed loaf of bread, puffed contentedly on his pipe, and declared that the best things in life rise slowly.

We think he was onto something.

A kitchen, a stubborn streak

The Lazy Toad began the way most good things do: at home, slowly, with a baker who refused to accept that anything had to be a compromise. After being diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2021, Emma set out to make the kind of baking people actually want — bread that bends instead of falls apart, bagels that are soft and chewy, cookies that vanish before the milk is poured.

If it doesn’t delight the people who could eat anything, it doesn’t make the menu.

How we bake

  • Small batches, made to order. Your treats are baked fresh for your pickup window — never pulled from a freezer.
  • Real ingredients, no shortcuts. Local eggs, fresh honey, Maine maple, and whatever’s in season — sourced from neighboring farmers.
  • No compromise on taste or texture. Recipe-testing until it comes out just right. That’s the whole job.
  • Strictly gluten-free. Our home kitchen is always safe, so our Celiac friends have no need to worry.

We bake with dairy, eggs, and nuts, and those are tagged on every item in the menu. Got a question about a specific bake? Just ask — we’re happy to talk it through.
